BETWEEN SHORES

After ten years of war at Troy, Odysseus turns west toward Ithaca. He knows how to fight, command, and survive; he no longer knows how a man comes home. Each encounter on the voyage challenges the heroic account he has made of himself. Polyphemus remembers not a monster’s defeat but the violation of his home, and Poseidon answers as a father. The Sirens ask to be heard rather than feared. Circe warns Odysseus that courage cannot solve every danger. At Scylla’s passage, he conceals the price from his crew; the ship survives, and six men pay. The Lotus Eaters offer peace through forgetting, while Calypso offers rest, affection, time, and immortality. Odysseus ultimately chooses the mortal shore. In Ithaca, Penelope has not waited passively: she keeps the house, protects the kingdom, and preserves the possibility of return. He reaches shore without army or victory, only as a mortal man going home.
